The Story Behind the Dogs

We have a kennel of 4 Siberian Huskies that were trained to pull sleds and pull us on skiis (ski-joring). The dogs that are still with us are Chuska (15), Pork Chop (13), Jackel (13) and Jean (12). Our dogs are now retired from sledding and so are we.

This is Taiga. Taiga was a long haired siberian husky and was the only husky we ever knew that liked to play catch. He was a good wheel dog. Our best lead dog was Stoney who died in 2001.

Other dogs that we have had that have gone to the great dog sled race in the sky include Stoney, Zeke, Bandit, Rutger, Astro, Max, By-tor, Chundar, Copper, Poole and Quiche. We miss them all.

Siberian huskies are remarkably quiet dogs. They will howl like wolves in the morning and occasionally during the day or even at night when the moon is full. They don't bark. Think twice before getting one as a pet-they are escape artists that don't return, dig, climb fences, chew through fences, eat small animals including farm animals and sometimes cats, shed like crazy, are not good at obedience training, can't be let off leash and like to mark their territory inside and out. Their good qualities are that they are very friendly, good with children, not protective at all, energetic, fun loving and happy go lucky. They do like the company of other dogs.

Pet Friendly Lodging

We don't have accommodations for cats or exotic pets but we do accept dogs on a limited basis.

The Sled Dog Suite

The Sled Dog Suite is the only room suitable for guests travelling with a dog and only for dogs that are 25 pounds or less, well mannered, well house broken and not too noisy! The suite has hard flooring that is washable in the event of an accident and that can be easily cleaned of dog hair. All of our other rooms have wall to wall carpet and are not suitable for animals.

Having been pet owners for most of our lives with 16 dogs at one time we have found that no matter how well behaved dogs are in their own homes they sometimes have accidents or display bad behavior in unfamiliar settings. In addition, as surprising as it may be, not everyone likes dogs or is comfortable around them.

So, if you are travelling with a dog (or two maximum) that is 25 pounds or less and you would like them inside with you, you are welcome to reserve the Sled Dog Suite. The suite has 2 rooms, with a California king sized bed in one room and a couch with pull out queen sleeper in the other. It has a private bathroom, as do all our rooms, and is also one of the only rooms that we have with a gas fireplace.

The rate for the suite varies depending on the number of occupants. For 2 people the rate is $179 per night plus $20 per dog (up to 2 total dogs, 25 pounds or less).

The Sled Dog Inn In-Door Kennel

We used to be named the Sled Dog Inn but changed the name in 2009 because we are losing our dogs to old age and will not be replacing them. So we decided to name our new kennel house the Sled Dog Inn instead.

For guests travelling with dogs that weigh more than 25 pounds or when the Sled Dog Suite is unavailable we've built a special kennel house for your pet. The kennel house is a 10 by 12 cabin with two kennel spaces inside. The cabin is not set up for humans to occupy but is perfect for most dogs that have previously experienced being in a kennel setting. We provide water bowls, dog beds, dog treats, cleaning supplies, and even have set up a table and chairs in the cabin for our human guests to spend some time reading Fido his bed time story.

The cost of the kennel per night is $20 and you can house 1 large, 2 medium or 3-4 small dogs in one kennel. In fact, we've had 5 visiting Siberian huskies in the kennel at one time and they were quite comfortable. If you would like to reserve the kennel please also reserve either the Mountain Meadow Room or the Ranch Romance Room. Those rooms have windows that face the kennel house and give you better supervision over your pet.

We know that there are some pet owners for whom this set up doesn't work. However there are no other B & Bs in Flagstaff that accept large dogs and only one that accepts small dogs. We have done our best to accommodate the needs of both guests with and those without animal travelling companions.

Please Note Our Pet Policies

• No dogs off leash.
• No dogs in common areas such as living rooms or dining rooms.
• No big dogs inside.
• Clean up after your dog-there are pooper scooper bags in the kennel house
• Guests are responsible for any damage caused by their pet and the credit card on file will be charged with any damage fees
• Do not leave your dogs in the room when you leave the premises; for your convenience you can leave them in the kennel house if their is space available
• No ill tempered or unfriendly dogs please
• Any dog making too much noise will be asked to leave or to be placed in the kennel if space is available
